Pastor's Perspective One of my aunts, now in her 80’s has
always been very active in her parish; sang in the choir, communion
minister, Parish Pastoral Council member. In a conversation with
her a while back we were discussing some of the challenges facing the
Catholic Church. Her response, “It’s a living church and
therefore it’s messy!” I thought of her insight when one of you
lent me this little item for use in our bulletin . . .
Live churches always have parking problems; dead churches do not.
Live churches are constantly changing methods; dead churches don’t have to.
Live churches have lots of noisy youth; dead churches are fairly quiet.
Live churches evangelize; dead churches fossilize.
Live churches are constantly deficient on staff; dead churches have surplus.
Live churches move out on faith; dead churches operate totally on sight.
Live churches’ expenses frequently exceed their income; dead churches take in more than they even dream of spending.
Live churches are filled with tithers; dead churches are filled with tippers.
Live churches grow so fast you forget people’s names; in dead churches everybody knows everybody’s names for years.
Live churches support Missions enthusiastically; dead churches care only for themselves.
How do these match up to your definition of “live church?”
Some interesting thoughts!
Easter Peace, Fr. Chuck
