It takes solitude to really hear!
Sometimes in our world of I-pods, cell phones, surround sound, car
stereos, mall music , , , we are so bombarded with sounds at
every moment of the day that our ears become dulled and we simply hear
nothing of what comes at us.
In his newest book, Crossing the Desert
the spiritual writer Robert J. Wicks reflects on this phenomenon.
He subtitled it “Learning to let go, see clearly and live
simply”, and I would add listen deeply. This is especially
true when it comes to the Word of God – which we so often take
for granted and shut it down.
He quotes one of the desert elders Abba Poemen, who once said:
The
nature of water is yielding; whereas, the character of stone is that it
is hard. Still, if you suspend a bottle filled with water above a
stone so that the water can drip, drop by drop on the stone, eventually
it will wear a hole in the stone.
In a similar way the Word of God is
so tender, and we are hard-hearted. Yet, when people are able to
frequently hear the Word of God, their hearts can be opened and they
shall have a sense of awe with respect to God and they will be changed.
May we brave the solitude that can slowly wear down our hearts to a deep sense of awe for God’s gentle, living word.
Peace,
Fr. Chuck
