Pastor's Perspective
Whether we are drawn to the ocean beach or the shores of Lake Ontario
we are all called to the water’s edge. Somehow whether we
are little children ~ or not quite so young ~ we are in awe, refreshed
by those blue waves rolling onto the shore. Especially on these
hot summer days we enjoy swimming, fishing, sailing or simply walking
barefoot in the surf.
Many years ago I came across this beautiful poem by Gustave Flaubert from “The Seasons”:
I ran down to the shore
across tracts of boulders
over which I leaped sure-footed.
Proudly I flung back my head,
proudly I breathed in the fresh breeze
which dried the wind in my hair.
The Spirit of God filled me
and I felt my heart expand;
I had a strange emotion of adoration.
I longed to be absorbed into the sun’s light
and lose myself in that azure immensity
along with the water smell that rose
from the crests of swells.
And then I was seized by a lunatic joy
and began to walk
as if the joys of heaven
had entered my soul.
Peace and Happy Summer,
Fr. Chuck
